Topics in Early Jewish Literature

How did early Jews and Christians read the Bible? In this seminar we will read widely in ancient Jewish and Christian literature to understand better what the Bible was considered to be, and how it was approached and interpreted by those reading or hearing it. We will explore a variety of ancient strategies, whether relatively minor interventions into the scriptural text itself, more extensive rewritings of scriptural accounts, the production of formal commentary texts, or new texts inspired and guided by the sacred traditions.
