Topics in the Dead Sea Scrolls
|Unit(s): 3.0||Level(s): Graduate||Term(s): Winter||Offered?: Yes|
This seminar focuses on the specific contributions of the Dead Sea Scrolls to the broader conceptualization of Second Temple Judaism and the relationship between Judaism and the origins of Christianity. A primary emphasis is on reading an extensive (though not complete) section of the corpus of texts from Qumran. Discussion in the seminar will focus both on the content of the texts themselves and on secondary literature on major issues in interpretation, including a familiarity with key reference tools. In addition to literary texts, archaeological materials will be considered and their contribution accessed. There will be a Hebrew reading component (and provision for alternate work for students without Hebrew).
