Topics in Modern Christian Thought: Themes - The Psalms in Patristic Interpretation

In this seminar, we shall look at Augustine’s interpretation of the Psalms, which came to dominate the way in which Western Christianity read the Psalms, and we shall compare his interpretation with that of the Antiochenes, Diodore of Tarsus and John Chrysostom. For Augustine, the Psalms are directly about Christ; for the Antiochenes they are historical documents that point to Christ. We shall look at the hermeneutical and theological principles that underlay their respective approaches to the interpretation of Scripture.
